The CV2188 is a microwave amplifier valve known as a travelling wave tube. In operation with several kV across the tube the thin glass envelope is inserted into a set of magnets arranged along the tube length.
The electron gun at the right of the picture generates an electron beam that passes down the length of the device. RF power is coupled into the tube from a cavity and at right angles to the helix. Energy is passed from the electron beam to the RF and an amplified signal is coupled out of the tube cavity at the opposite end.
Such amplifiers can have gains of up to 40 dB and can be made to work over a range of frequencies. This tube operates at 3.6 to 4.2 GHz.

The thin glass tube envelope is 13 mm in diameter and, excluding the IO base pins, is 425 mm tall.
