The XC12 is a two terminal cold cathode tube. The operating conditions are identical to the XC12T that contains some tritium radioactive gas to initiate the discharge in total darkness.
The internal structure is hidden by the internal coating.
Thanks to Mark Mallison for sending the images.
The thin glass tube envelope is 5 mm in diameter and, excluding the base wires, is 28 mm tall.
