The XC12T is a two terminal cold cathode tube. For use in total darkness the tube contains tritium gas that decays by beta radiation. The electrons given off by the tritium provide the background ionisation to allow the device to strike in complete darkness.
The internal construction.
The thin glass tube envelope is 5 mm in diameter and, excluding the base wires, is 28 mm tall.
Reference: Data-sheet. Type XC12T was first introduced in 1960. See also 1960 adverts.
