The VR17 was specified by the Air Ministry for the RAF. It is a directly heated battery triode and came in a Cossor box.
The filament rating suggests a thoriated tungsten dull-emitter valve.
The gettering completely covers the envelope, however, under strong light the shadow of the anode can be seen. The anode is a vertical rectangular box.

The wide glass tube envelope is 29 mm in diameter and, excluding the B4 base pins, is 78 mm tall.
