The CV1053 is a variable-mu RF pentode, with variable screen characteristics, for use as a controlled RF or IF amplifier. The frequency range of operation would be up to 30 MHz. The Mullard EF39 was the prototype.
The GPO sampled print indicates the use in telephone distribution. Before the valve was known as the CV1053, the GPO specification would be POVT180.
The classic envelope is 29 mm in diameter and excluding the IO base pins it is 85 mm long.
References: Data-sheet, 1040 & 1043. Type CV1053 was first introduced in 1939. See also 1939 adverts.
