The 5949 is a hydrogen thyratron designed to produce pulses of up to 6 MW with an average power in the pulse train of about 6 kW.
The unusual feature of this thyratron is the hydrogen reservoir capsule. The voltage on this capsule adjusts and maintains the hydrogen pressure within the envelope.
The base and pinch components. The hydrogen capsule is on the left and one end of the capsule heater can be seen.
The top of the shield with the copper anode connection running through a glass sheath into the screen.

The wide glass tube envelope is 82 mm in diameter, and excluding the base pins is 274 mm tall.
