The X101 is a triode hexode mixer for use in receivers. The X101 is identical to the X81 except it was designed for use in AC/DC sets with a 100 mA series heater chain the X81 has a 6.3 V heater for parallel operation in AC sets.
The triode oscillator is designed to produce 10 volts pk-pk to drive the hexode mixer. The all glass envelope is protected by an all encompassing aluminium screening can that also serves to hold the spigot carrying base in place. The X81 exhibit also has pictures of a valve out of its can.
The reverse of the can carries the paper Marconi label.
The wide glass tube envelope is 33 mm in diameter, and excluding the B8B base pins is 61 mm tall.
