This battery double diode triode has a very low filament consumption. This suggests an oxide coated filament. It would have been used for detection, AGC detection and first audio amplification in radio receivers. Possible portable military equipment. The MO (Mazda Octal) base dates it as 1938 or after.
The zinc loaded paint in this example has been coated in varnish. The ZA7022 is the old UK Army stores code. AR stands for Army Receiving. After 1941 it was renamed the CV1306 when all UK valve purchasing came under common specifications. Commercially the Type was the HL23DD from Mazda.
The reverse has no markings.
The classic envelope is 32 mm in diameter and, excluding the MO base pins, is 82 mm tall.
References: Data-sheet, 1040 & 1043. Type AR8 was first introduced in 1938. See also 1938 adverts.
