In the 1920s valves were very expensive and the filaments short lived. Many companies like Valco offered a repair service. The filaments were replaced by the company's own. A repair would cost about 50% of the cost of a new valve. In later years as valves became cheaper and their construction more specialised, the independent repair business ended. For specialist valves such as high power silica envelope types the manufactures would repair them right up to the end of the valve era.
